We are called to work with God and not for God. God is not looking for people to serve Him but people that He would serve and also serve through.
God is not sitting in heaven, with crossed legs and sending us all on an errand as Earthly masters do. He is daily reaching out to mankind with His amazing Grace.
The term ‘Servants of God’ doesn’t exist in the New Covenant anymore.
Jesus said, “I do not call you servants any longer, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you [My] friends because I have revealed to you everything that I have heard from My father.” (John 15:15)
Mentors want you to serve because they believe it’s only in service that you can learn something or be entitled to what they have known. Indirectly, they use you because they too were used in the past. This isn’t God’s design, but the slavery mentality inherited from Egypt. If you have to work for it before you get it, then the purpose of Salvation is defeated because nothing you have in redemption is a reward but a Gift – Free Gift! None of us deserve what we are enjoying today, this means God has no demand on you and I. He is a loving God, not a slave master.
Our duty, therefore, is to know Him and not to serve Him. When we truly know Him, God then starts serving through us. Apostle Paul prayed, “that I may know Him…” It is when we know Him that our Love for Him comes alive to do what He is doing. Love, therefore, makes our service an unforced rhythm -not doing things so that our prayers can be answered.
In the New Covenant, service is an overflow of knowing Christ. If my wife does everything for me as a responsibility, then that’s not Love anymore but the Law.
God is honored when He serves us and serves the world through us. Dr. Myles Munroe said in one of his books, “To fulfill God’s purpose, men and women must desire to do His will – not by working for Him as His servants but with Him as His offspring.”
